Ramadan for the Poor

Blikkiesdorp Community in Delft
On the Saturday, 15th of August 2009, I felt sad, grateful and happy. Mixed emotions I know. Last weekend, the MSA of the Cape, Islamic Relief and Darul Islam Zakah Fund partnered in raising funds, packing and distributing Ramadan Hampers to the poor areas in the Western Cape Region, South Africa.
From young 9 year-old children to the elderly volunteers, we all helped with the collation and packing. The highlight of the day for me was to actually be present and experience the recipient emotion/faces when they received their ramadan hamper. It was unbelievable.

Hamper Contents
All we gave them was a few things (flour, oil, rice, spices, peas etc) to help them through only a couple of days of the Ramadan month. It was little, but it meant so much to them.
As I said initially , I was sad that we couldn’t give more. I was disappointed in that only a few volunteers stayed behind to see and witness what these people go through daily. Lack of water, lack of space, lack of social activity and education, infrastructure, etc
But then again I was so grateful for what ALLAH has given me and I am sure the volunteers felt the same way too. At the end of the day we touched about 500 hundred families out of millions but it was worth it and better than nothing. May ALLAH reward us all for the effort, big and small.
This weekend, fortunately, you have another chance of helping us out. If you in the Cape Town area. Visit us at the Darul Islam High School, in Greenhaven, Surrey Estate.
We packing another 500 Ramadan hampers this Saturday at 9am. For more information on this project, please contact Goolam Tambe: 082 786 0027
Keep well and all the best for Ramadan
