When is Eid 2009?

Eid-ul-Fitr 2009 (moonsighting)

The Astronomical New Moon is on Septmeber 18, 2009 (Friday) at 18:44 UT. This moon is not visible anywhere on September 18. On September 19, it will still not be visible in Asia, Europe and Canada. It can easily be seen in South Africa and South America on Sep 19. On the same day, with difficulty, it is possible to be seen in Western Australia, Central Africa, Caribbean Islands, Central America and very Southern areas of USA.

Ramadan began in most of the world on August 22. For Shawwal, on Sep. 19 there is a good chance of moonsighting in South Africa and South America. So, based on that sighting, Eid is expected in these areas on Sunday, Sep 20, Insha-Allah

Eid-ul-Fitr 2009 (islamicmoon)

Lunar visibility on Sept. 19, 2009 is out of question anywhere in the world except S. Africa, and parts of South America (Rio (Brazil), Buenos Aires (Argentina) Punta Arenas (Chile), etc. The moon will be difficult to see in Panama (28 hours, 16.5 angle, 10 altitude) because of only a41 min. lag. The same is true for Hawaii (age 33.8 h, angle 19.2 altitude 8.7 lag 39 min.) though the chances there are better than within the US and Caribbean.

  1. Peace be upon you 19/09/2009

I am writing just to say thank you for the work you have done on this webpage.
It has helped me decide when to celebrate Eid-Ul-Fitr 1430 as there is a great division in the muslim community in Sydney, AUSTRALIA.
    May ALLAH reward you.

  2. So why are most countries like Saudia Arabia, and the USA celebrating EID on the 20th when they can’t possibly see the moon on the 19th?

  3. yeah okay, thanks. good info.

  4. According to Hadees moon sighting is imperative to end Ramadan. Hadees also tell us if the horizon is cloudy & it is not possible to sight the moon then keep the 30th fast.
Mathematical calculations strongly indicate that moon will not be visible in Australia on the 19/9/09.
Where is the credible evidence to celebrate Eid on Sunday?

  5. L Ahmad,

Please review my post again, there was never any claim that Australia would be celebrating EID on Sunday.

“It can easily be seen in South Africa and South America on Sep 19. On the same day, with difficulty, it is possible to be seen in Western Australia, Central Africa, Caribbean Islands, Central America and very Southern areas of USA.”
