Fastin’ Overseas
Originally from the UK, I arrived in Arizona 6 weeks ago, for 5 months of flight training. When I landed here, I was aware that this would be the first Ramadhan I’d be taking part in where I would be away from my family and friends, which felt odd. Back in London, I’d be used to taking part in Iftaars with family, and joining friends in taking part in Iftaar-events (i.e. Iftaar with the Homeless) around London. In addition to this, I was also aware that I’d be hard pressed to fast many of the days, due to my line of study being quite physically demanding (intending to make these fasts up when back in the UK). Nonetheless, I managed my first fast on one of my days off, which was one of the most rewarding days I’ve ever felt.
Me and a friend decided to go to Tempe (a district of Arizona about 30 miles from my accomodation) to break our fast, and then to the Arizona State University-linked Masjid, the Islamic Community Center, to pray Maghrib & Isha. As we were running slightly late, we broke our fast in the car with water, then went straight to the masjid. We were pleasantly surprised to see such an elegant mosque, and Muslims from a large variety of different backgrounds. Having prayed Maghrib, we went outside to find that ICC run Iftaar in the courtyard, with enough food laid out for everyone. It was very well organised, and impressive to see that they do this on a daily basis. We got chatting to some guys about where other masjids were to be found, and good places to find halal food (especially useful advice, as nearest mosque/halal food store are 25 miles away)!

Being away from home, it was especially nice to sense the feeling of community amongst the Muslims here, and how welcome everyone is made to feel. As I was beginning to miss family, friends and home, it was a much-needed boost that made me feel more at home in my new surroundings. This experience has bought me closer to my faith, which in turn has given me more confidence in trusting in Allah, especially in times of hardship.
